About
Established in 2017, Waltman Structural & Residential Design is an independent structural and residential design practice founded and operated by Cate Waltman, P.E.
With nearly two decades of experience in building design, construction, and project management across New England, the practice brings a deep understanding of how architecture and engineering intersect to create enduring, functional, and beautiful spaces.
Projects range from energy-efficient mass timber tiny homes to large double duplexes, adaptive reuse projects, and complex structural renovations. Each one is guided by a commitment to thoughtful design, technical precision, and innovation that balances aesthetics, performance, and constructability.

design approach
Every project begins with a conversation and a clear understanding of goals, site conditions, and constraints. From there, the scope is defined, designs are developed and reviewed, and drawings or reports are produced as needed.
Designs can be furnished either as bid sets for pricing with multiple contractors, or as permit sets when a contractor is already on board. The amount of design work depends on the homeowner’s needs and the project requirements.

Design goals
Buildings should feel strong, balanced, and built with care. Each project starts by understanding what the owner needs and finding practical ways to make those ideas work. Whether it’s a small renovation or new construction, the goal is to create something that functions well, fits the site, and is built to be both lasting and beautiful.

collaboration
Much of the work involves partnering with architects and builders to bring their designs to life. The goal is to support the design vision with structural solutions that are efficient, buildable, and well coordinated. Collaboration is always welcome, whether providing full design support or focusing solely on the structural scope within a larger team effort.
